About EN
EN is a valid word in the official Scrabble dictionary (US), the UK Scrabble Dictionary and Words with Friends (ENABLE).
Ah, en. It’s an interesting word with several valid definitions. Unfortunately, it’s also incredibly frustrating for any Scrabble opponent who challenges its usage.
More about EN
Of course, the simplest definition for “en” is exactly what it sounds like—the letter N. Yes, from the alphabet. Why do we need to spell out a letter? Why do we include the letter itself within the word? No one knows. But it’s in the dictionary. Yes, really.
En also means a type setting that’s half the space of an em. If you’re frustrated right now, you’re not alone. It does make sense, though. Look at the letter M. Now look at the letter N. Theoretically, in old-fashioned print, N takes up less space than M. And somehow this became the standard unit of measure for typesetters everywhere.
It’s also a prefix that means “into,” but of course prefixes don’t count in Scrabble—unless they have other meanings, too.
Examples of “en” in a sentence:
- What’s your favorite letter? Mine is en.
- What comes after el? Is it em or en?
