Scrabble Dictionary Checker

Is it a word? Type it in to see whether Scrabble US, Scrabble UK and Words with Friends allow it, and what it scores in each.

Is it a valid word?

Type a word to see whether each dictionary allows it.

How the checker works

Type one word of 2 to 15 letters and press Check. Each card gives the verdict in one dictionary: a tick and the word’s points if it’s allowed, a cross if it isn’t. The points are the face value of the tiles, before any bonus squares. Words with Friends counts with its own tile values, so the same word can score differently there.

When the word has a page, the link under the cards opens it, with its definition, anagrams and the words you can make by adding a letter. Holding a rack rather than a word? The word finder lists every word your letters make.

Which Scrabble dictionary do we check?

Which words count depends on where you play, so there’s no one Scrabble dictionary for everyone. Word Find checks three word lists, the same three as the dictionary switch on every page:

  • Scrabble US: the official Scrabble dictionary, the word list for Scrabble in the United States and Canada. 178,716 words.
  • Scrabble UK: the UK Scrabble Dictionary, the word list for Scrabble outside North America. It holds nearly every word in the North American list (all but 22 newer words, such as OK, EW and ZEN, which our copy doesn’t have yet) and many British and international words besides, which makes it the largest of the three. 267,751 words.
  • Words with Friends: ENABLE, the free word list Words with Friends was first built on, scored with Words with Friends’ own tile values. 168,548 words.
Is it a word? WEIRD is allowed in the official Scrabble dictionary (US) and scores 9 points; the misspelling WIERD is not allowed.
Type a word in and the checker says whether the official Scrabble dictionary allows it, and what it scores.

Is there an official Scrabble dictionary?

Yes, more than one, and this page isn’t any of them. Word Find isn’t an official Scrabble dictionary, and we’re not affiliated with Hasbro, Mattel or any players’ association. Here’s who decides what counts:

  • United States and Canada: the official Scrabble dictionary.
  • Everywhere else: the UK Scrabble Dictionary.

Our Scrabble US list is the official Scrabble dictionary’s, with newer words such as OK, EW and ZEN. If a word is ever in dispute at the table, the printed official dictionary has the final say.

Scrabble US or Scrabble UK?

Play by the list your game uses: in the United States and Canada that’s usually Scrabble US, and almost everywhere else Scrabble UK. For a friendly game, agree on one before the first tile goes down. A word only Scrabble UK allows, like ZO, is a fine play in a UK game and a lost turn in a US one if your opponent challenges it.

Playing Words with Friends? Choose Words with Friends. Its list and its tile values are its own, and the game has added and dropped words over the years, so now and then a word plays differently in the app.

Scrabble dictionary FAQ

Is this the official Scrabble dictionary?

No. Word Find checks words against the official word lists: the official Scrabble dictionary for Scrabble US and the UK Scrabble Dictionary for Scrabble UK. The official Scrabble dictionary is the official list for North America, and the UK Scrabble Dictionary is the list used everywhere else.

Why is a word valid in Scrabble UK but not in Scrabble US?

The UK Scrabble Dictionary holds nearly every word in the official Scrabble dictionary (US), plus British and international words the North American list leaves out, such as ZO and CH. The exceptions are 22 newer words, such as OK, EW and ZEN, which our copy of the UK list doesn’t have yet. So on Word Find a word valid in Scrabble US is almost always valid in Scrabble UK too, but many words valid in Scrabble UK aren’t valid in Scrabble US.

How are the points worked out?

We add up the face values of the tiles, before any bonus squares. Scrabble US and Scrabble UK use the same tile values. Words with Friends has its own, so JO scores 9 points in Scrabble and 11 in Words with Friends.

Are names and abbreviations allowed?

No. Proper nouns, abbreviations and words that need a hyphen or an apostrophe aren’t allowed in Scrabble or Words with Friends, so none of our dictionaries has them.

What if I have letters, not a word?

Use the word finder. Type the letters on your rack, with a ? for each blank tile, and it lists every word they make in your dictionary, highest score first.
