Definition: A musical term denoting the fourth note of the major scale.
Millions of children recognize (and sing) FA thanks to the 1959 Broadway show (and 1965 classic film) "The Sound of Music," which produced an ear-worm melody known as "Do, a Deer" (actual song title, "Do-Re-Mi," but no one calls it that). In musical notation, FA is the fourth note of the major scale in the musical language known as "solfege," which sets the notes to sol-fa syllables.
For the record, the Benedictine monk Guido de Arezzo first developed solfege in Italy during the early 11th century. All of us owe a debt of thanks to Guido because he not only invented solfege but also the entire system of musical notation. He used lines and spaces for the notes and named those notes with the first seven letters of the alphabet.
Today, solfege is commonly used in choir practice and performance, where singers unfamiliar with musical notation may find it easier to reference musical notes by their solfege counterparts.
