More about XU
The word xu comes from the French word “sou,” which means “penny.” “Dồng” refers to bronze, which was the material used to make pennies.
The word dates back to 1948 when it was common in South Vietnam as a form of monetary exchange. Back then, it was a coin roughly equivalent to a cent (or one penny—hence the name).
In 1978, North Vietnam and South Vietnam unified their currencies, creating the dồng.
At this time, a hào was a tenth of a dồng, and a xu was a tenth of a hào. Eventually, the Vietnamese people decided this was too complicated. Nowadays, they just use dồng banknotes as currency. For the most part, their retail stores don’t even accept coins. There are still a few banks that accept them, though.
Xu is practically worthless today—except in Scrabble, where it’s worth nine points.
Examples of Xu in a Sentence:
I’m so broke that I don’t even have a xu to my name.
Let’s exchange these xus in for some cash at the bank.
Do you have a xu? I want to buy something super cheap at an antique store in Vietnam, but all I have is this penny.
