Is Extant a word? Extant meaning
EXTANT
(adjective)
Definition: still existing; something that has survived destruction.
“Extant” is one of those odd words that you hardly ever hear anymore. Considering how rarely it’s used, it’s remarkable that it’s still extant. In contemporary speech, “extant” has been pretty much replaced by “existing,” which is rather a shame, because in our rich and expansive English language, there’s certainly room for both words. However, given the lack of popularity for so many words containing the letter “x,” perhaps it’s not surprising that “extant” seems to primarily survive among bibliophiles, historians and Scrabble players.
“Extant” first showed up in mainstream usage in 1545. Its roots are in the Latin word “extantem,” the present participle of “extare,” which means to “stand out above a surface,” or to exist or be firm. Etymologists tell us that “extant” was first used to denote the sense of “in existence” during the 1560s.
Ways to use EXTANT in a sentence:
- Until YouTube came along, we thought there were no extant videos of Maria Callas performing "La Traviata" in Lisbon in 1958.
- Thanks to the internet, we have every extant recorded performance of Monty Python’s "Dead Parrot" sketch.
- Unfortunately, due to lack of interest, there are no extant copies of Ronald Milhouse’s "How to Leash Train Your African Wombat.”
